Best Quentin Tarantino Movies | Top 10 Films

“Movies are not about the weekend that they’re released, and in the grand scheme of things, that’s probably the most unimportant time of a film’s life.”
-Quentin Tarantino

Pulp Fiction (1994)

(154 min) Crime, Drama
Pulp Fiction, the winner of 64 awards including a Golden Globe and an Academy Award, is the 2nd movie written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. This disruptive yet specifically non-linear story narrative displays a perfect example of the brilliance that layers inside Tarantino’s mind. The characters are thoroughly introduced and tactfully blended with each other like a recipe. With distinctive plot lines, unexpected twists and a slight change in perspective for the viewers (literally), Tarantino orchestrates the pacing spectrum into, what today is known as one of the best movies in the last 20 years.

Hateful 8 (2015)

(187 min) Drama/Mystery
“No one comes up here without a damn good reason”
Take a trip to ‘the west’; only the desert’s capped with snow and it’s probably the best cinematography by the director till date. It portrays post civil war events among eight people with (obviously) grey backstories. Tarantino once stated that directing is more about describing a situation rather than narrating the whole story, and his atypical choice of using 70mm to shoot the film definitely pays off as the mood of each scene is captured wonderfully. It might not be a sequel of Django Unchained but it does have principled bad guys, crazy plot twists and bloodshed (bloodshed on snow, ya’ll). It is an unfolding mystery which would amaze you, keep you tangled and on the hook the whole time.

Fun fact: {Tarantino edited 2 versions of the movie as 70mm films can’t be altered for small resolutions. The roadshow version has an extra 6 minutes of runtime and alternate takes on few scenes}

Reservoir Dogs (1992)

(93 min) Crime, Drama, Adventure
Reservoir Dogs stands as the debut film and also a rebellious choice for the list as the film depicts brutal and bashing scenes of violence and use of profanity. We’re guessing Tarantino added a few scenes just to give a sense of how he felt after months of hunting for producers didn’t work for him. Yes, Reservoir Dogs is an independent film shot on a very low budget but the exceptional prowess of the director and co-writer yells out that a good movie does not need a huge budget. It is not your average Crime – Drama movie, you get to know each character one by one and understand the life they lead by the style they carry themselves with. Most of the movie is shot in a real mortuary and on top of all the unapologetic violence, you’ll get to see the bad guys reflecting on themselves and judging their actions too.

Inglorious Basterds (2009)

(153 min) Action/Drama/War
Inglorious Basterds portrays an alternate plot to the II World War. Its narrative point is said to be close to Pulp Fiction. QT stepped down from his usual style and had a very different approach with Inglorious Basterds, casting French, German and American actors for respective roles and dialogues. The film does not have any pop culture references but then, this is a film about Hitler and the war and even if the screenwriters somehow managed to slip a few in there, they wouldn’t have mattered as the movie is part French, German and American. When it’s not profanity, it’s the whole language -,-. Strangely, you’ll witness an ending as you desired in a Tarantino Movie.

Django Unchained (2012)

(165 min) Drama/Action/Love Story
The events of Django Unchained takes place in the 1880s when black skinned people were seen as slaves in America. The story sets and unfolds with scenic and dramatic desert landscapes and wooden cabins, which takes you to a ride along bad guys with a strength of personality and ethics. Although it is a revenge/love story, Django Unchained can make you feel a variety of emotions including a sense of unsettlement and laughter in a very short gap. It also has the Tarantino touch of sudden bursts of violence after long build ups of calmness. But this calmness has verbal tensions among characters which will keep you on the cutting edge. Watch out for the free Jamie Foxx, pissed off Leonardo Di Caprio and the dapper style and flow of Christoph Waltz.

Death Proof

(113 min) Crime/Action
The atmosphere in Death Proof exploited the trending genres in/around 2007 with vicious psychopathic stories, a grindhouse type style of presentation and wild muscle cars on streets. Expect some quality visual instances, classy visual effects and very precise attention to detail in Tarantino’s first cinematographed thriller. Tarantino manages to give something back to the genre that got him into movies. Unlike his style of quickly swapping through the scenes, this one gives you a chance to settle in and interpret what’s going on. You get to peek inside the sceptically damaged brain of the director as he barely holds off from displaying unyoked cycles of nudity, fetishes and gruesome graphics content, which confirms it as a Tarantino Movie. The effort in the darkroom can be seen and appreciated throughout the movie and if you are one of those retro music hunters, you’re in for a treat.

Jackie Brown

(154 min) Crime, Drama, Thriller
Jackie Brown has a very contrasting approach to a Tarantino. You get to see a different side of the director which is very calm, collected and valour. Since this was his latest work after Pulp Fiction and it represented a different perspective in the eye of the director, the movie earned fans gradually with time. Although for once, it is not an original written piece of the director, it still has the QT story narrative. People from different lives, different histories bought together by a desire almost every human possess. With mind games, sticky situations, amazing camera movements, and tension all over your favourite, Jackie Brown will make you play the game as you’d wonder who is who in this classic adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s Rum Punch.

Four Rooms

(98 min) Comedy
4 directors with 4 stories direct and showcase their respective segments as things take a wicked turn in certain rooms of the hotel. We know it’s tough to be classified as a Tarantino if there’s no violence, crazy cussing or unasked brutality. But with hostages – witches and Antonio Banderas, this is a light-hearted comedy film with a cameo by the director himself.

Kill Bill (the whole series)

Kill Bill is revenge – martial arts action film written & directed by Quentin Tarantino. With a strong storyline the movie shows and like always, lets us feel and interpret the revenge story. With a ton of action-packed sword fight scenes and QT directing each step as the samurai sword needles through the blood vessels, Kill Bill I gives you an adamant Uma Thurman driven to kill a bunch of people. While Kill Bill II changes the beat (just like QT likes to do) and roots the story by giving us an experience into Uma Thurman’s past and shows an entirely different phase of her life. Homage to a bunch of different genres and to Bruce Lee keeps going in KB II with the iconic yellow jumpsuit. Tarantino shows again that he’s the master of cinematic compositions, which help the second part to fill the void that the first movie left.
{Kill Bill was supposed to be a single movie but was split because of its 4hr runtime}

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Upcoming)

Quentin Tarantino has his name to 19 movies in the 21st century with his latest project being in 2015. 4 years of desolation led to a revelation for the fans about the upcoming release of a project in late July. But as of there’s not any official statement as to what it might be about. There are rumours that it might be related to the 1971-72 Manson murders or trials. Whatever the movie may be about, we are glad that there’s going to be a Tarantino out soon after all these years. With stars like Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt & Leonardo DiCaprio in the latest project 2019 is going to be full of QTs cinema aesthetics, grunge homage to vintage genres from the 60s – 70s, close-up feet shots, retro music charts, and red apple cigarettes.
